A model of a black hole. The blue region is called an ‘accretion disk’, and composed of hot gas and dust slowly spiraling into the black hole. It is thought that the magnetic field close to the black hole accelerates some of the accreting matter away from the black hole, forming two high-speed jets. The grid superimposed on the image is a model of the space-time continuum—the fabric of space and time that is described by Einstein’s theory of general relativity—which is severely warped in the vicinity of a black hole. |
